Chapter Seven

The next morning while Lucy was dressing for the day, her thoughts were in a turmoil. On the one hand, she felt ecstatic that someone wanted to pursue her. But on the other hand, who was that someone? Was he a fat, old geezer that no other woman would ever desire for a husband? Was he a mechanic who spent all his time with his apparatuses and didn’t know how to hold a proper conversation? Or was he a charmer like John, who took advantage of unsuspecting women? Perhaps he was John himself.

And that was perhaps the most frightening possibility of them all.

As Lucy finished putting on her dark green dress and lacing up her boots, she paused to look in the mirror. Her hair had always been her best feature. Auburn in color, it had the ability to reflect a myriad of colors in the sunlight. Her eyes were a nice light brown, like the coat of a new fawn, and her nose was narrow. She wished it were a bit wider to help balance the closeness of her eyes. But she supposed it worked okay with her delicate bone structure.

She fingered a length of yellow ribbon. Should she put it in her hair? She hardly ever wore adornments of any kind even on Sundays. Such frivolity! But just this once might be okay, especially if she wanted to let this unknown gentleman know that she was interested in his suit. She decided to say a prayer.

“Father, should I wear this ribbon today? Is the man who penned the letter honorable?”

She waited for a moment. A warm feeling entered her heart and stayed there awhile before it faded.

“All right. I suppose that’s my answer.” Lucy thanked the Lord for answering her, then reverently closed her prayer. Opening her eyes, she took a deep breath and, with shaky fingers, tied a yellow bow around the bun in her hair.

She halfway expected John to say something about it when she knocked on his door fifteen minutes later, but he just smiled and invited her in like before. Hmm. Perhaps the letter was from some other bachelor in town. But who? Lately they were dropping like flies. More women had moved into Belle, who were either prettier, sweeter, or more talented than Lucy, and caught themselves a husband right away. Another reason that Lucy had withdrawn from everyone else. It was hard to maintain a carefree look when she cared too much that she had been here all her life and still hadn’t found a special someone to share it with. Would it take moving somewhere else to find him? How could she leave the only place she had ever known?

John proceeded to fill Lucy in on the goings on of that morning. “The children have all had their breakfast.” Turning to Simon, who was still dawdling at the table with a book in his hand, he added, “Hurry, Simon. We don’t want to be late.”

Simon grumbled, “Coming.” He washed down another bite of his cornmeal mush with a glass of milk and grabbed his schoolbooks.
