Reed was hidden in shadow. At this point she had no idea what he was thinking or how he felt about any of this. Maybe that was for the best.

Velli sighed and turned her attention back to the man she’d been ignoring, Silver Fox.

“Nirvelli.”

“I knew what I was doing. I wanted to do it. I enjoyed it.” Now every word she said had an impact. Reed visibly flinched, and the Elders grumped around her. “If I’d had another Wolf so willing before Kane I probably would have done it sooner. Instead I satisfied myself with Warriors. Many, many Warriors. I let them abuse me, and have me, for their own perverse pleasures, not to mention my own.”

“Enough,” Silver Fox spoke low. “I know what you’re doing.”

“Do you? Have you ever known what I was really doing?” Velli snorted. “Have any of you ever had any clue what I was really doing? How many men I fucked and let beat the crap out of me? Do you even care? Do you dare to ask why? Or did the so-called all-knowing Spirits tell you to leave me alone?”

One of the Elders Shifted with a growl. The Bear roared and snuffed at her before the Elder managed to Shift back.

“Nirvelli, please.” Black Feather’s voice had softened since their walk. It reminded her more of when she was young than the angry man that had dragged her from her room. “Do not provoke the Elders or the Spirits.”

“Why not? Why shouldn’t I? They’ve left me to a cruel life filled with pain that no one bothered to see.”

“Velli.” Reed’s whisper broke through her anger. It cracked a bit, but he pushed forward. “I told you. I see you.”

“You tried. Maybe you saw what I was doing. Maybe you knew I was screwing everyone around you while I kept you away. Did you ever once confront me? Did you ever once do anything about it?” Velli shook her head. “They’ve turned you into one of them, Reed. Blind old fools, kowtowing to invisible beings that know nothing, that are cruel and evil, punishing souls long before they’ve earned it. You’d rather listen to drug-induced visions than see a person and her true suffering.”

“That’s enough.” Silver Fox’s command rang through the clearing with intense power. “There will be no more of that. We are here about what you’ve done against Shifter law. That is what we discuss.”

“We are Wolves. Our Wolves are…” Velli shook her head when the Wolf howled long and low in her head, fairly screaming the word mates before it settled back down. “Our Wolves are drawn to each other. It doesn’t feel wrong.”

“It is. We cannot allow it to happen again.” Silver Fox lifted his chin, most likely expecting her to cower under the burst of power he pushed toward her. After all these years he still expected her to respond to Alpha magic.

“You can’t stop it. We’ll leave if we have to.” She ignored Reed’s gasp. “Every one of you old men are stupid and blind.
