Chapter Fourteen
Those who were to be interviewed for the press conference received little envelopes with invitations, under our dorm doors. Chloe and I both got them and scanned the calligraphic words—
Due to your incredible athletic prowess and potential for the upcoming Olympic games, you’re invited to a photography session and subsequent press conference this Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. sharp. We will meet at the gymnastics arena.
“I wonder who else was invited,” Chloe said, folding her letter again and tapping it on her desk.
“Poppy is going to lose it,” I replied, thinking about her bandaged face. “I heard her grumbling the other day that if she doesn’t update her Instagram frequently enough, she loses followers.”
“Oh, right. Let me check.” Chloe grabbed her phone and swept through her Instagram feed.
“Don’t tell me you follow Poppy...” I said and then shot her a look of disapproval.
Chloe shrugged. “I follow everyone. I just want to know what’s going on. Here.” She turned Poppy’s feed toward me, where she had posted a photo of herself in her gymnastics uniform, her hair perfectly straight and shining, and her makeup gorgeous and magazine ready. Of course, in the photo, she wore a bandage over her cheek. Beneath it was the caption—
Being an athlete is tough. Every day, you give it your all, and every day, you might get punished for your efforts. Despite this recent injury, I will keep fighting for my Olympic dreams. What about you, followers? Do you have any dreams? Tell me about them below!
“She’s very good at getting followers,” Chloe affirmed. She scrolled down below to find several commenters, all of whom seemed to take pity on her and tell her to “keep fighting.” It turned my stomach.
“I’m glad she didn’t tell Mr. Piper what happened,” I said, my voice heavy.
“What could she have said? That she tried to push you guys into the ravine and Zed fought back? Yeah, I don’t think that’s such a good look. Plus, out there, it was you two against her.”
Since the incident, Poppy hadn’t so much as looked at me. Actually, my life seemed better than ever. Theo and Clinton had arrived back to the academy, and, along with Zed, we had spent the last night laughing and talking and kissing a bit too late, so much so that I felt little bags under my eyes that day. Chloe had commented on it when I had arrived back just after midnight. “You’re going to hate yourself tomorrow,” she’d said.
Since it was our senior year and the only one we had left before the Olympics—we all had a general sense of focus, which meant that we didn’t drink or eat much sugar and had more focus on our bodies and emotional health than the previous year. Theo called it “adulting,” which seemed hilarious coming from a nearly-eighteen-year-old, but honestly, it felt like it. We had more riding on our shoulders in the next twelve months than most people much older than us did.
