Drinking alcohol and taking illicit or even some prescribed drugs are high-risk factors for sustaining TBI. Alcohol and drugs alone can make people more impulsive. Chronic or excessive use of these substances can affect the brain and lead to greater impulsivity. At the same time, these substances can make people more likely to sustain a TBI, which can exacerbate the impulsivity further, leading to a vicious cycle. People who sustain a TBI, therefore, should not drink alcohol or use drugs

Treatment

If you are concerned about impulsivity, either for yourself or for a person you care for, seek professional help. Untreated or poorly managed impulsivity has the potential to lead to unsafe or dangerous behaviors. Contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist regarding your concerns; they will be able to help or will make appropriate referrals. Impulsivity may also be associated with other medical or emotional problems, so assessment by a professional is mandatory. In addition, psychologists or other medical professionals can administer tests to determine the nature and severity of impulsivity. Test results can help to guide treatment. Treatment of impulsivity is multipronged and includes a combination of medications, behavioral strategies, and environmental adjustments.
