28.

He was broaching the village, swinging into the pub carpark when Samira’s voice crackled through again. ‘Whisky One-Five, can you hang back with the car, please? Final approach on foot. Over.’

‘Will do. Over.’

He grabbed the telescopic baton from the glove compartment and pulled his combat on over his suede. He nosed out into the rain, locked up and started jogging towards the old orphanage. He saw her as he crested the rise. Soaked, leather jacket collar turned up, arms folded across herself, squatting next to the wall.

‘Enjoying your morning off?’ He went into a crouch beside her.

‘Every minute.’ She glanced at her watch, then gave him a look. ‘Your thing… your trauma thing. Doesn’t have anything to do with firearms, does it?’

‘What are you saying?’

‘Cathy Byford. She has a handgun.’ Samira’s nostrils flared as she spoke. ‘In there with another female, probably one Brenda Terrell. Forced her here more or less at gunpoint.’

Cathy with a gun? He rolled that around a little. ‘Why didn’t you –?’

‘Thought the Manchester Macho squad would just make things worse. Was I wrong?’

She had a point, of course. Will inclined his head towards the building. ‘Cathy? I mean, really?’

‘Bloody hell!’ He shook his head. ‘What is it with this sodding couple? Like they’re trying to out-crazy each other.’

‘Marriage.’ Samira’s voice was tight, adrenaline-soaked. He checked her over again, thinking procedure. But her failure to follow regs wasn’t bothering him half so much as the look in her eyes as she rocked from foot to foot on her haunches.

He held up a hand. ‘Let’s just take it easy. You might be right about Manchester armed response. I’d suggest calling it in to our lot but the only firearms trained officer in Spinnerby apart from me is DCI Price.’ He grimaced a little, picturing Price blazing in with .38 and a Clint Eastwood swagger. Will looked at her. ‘We can do without him or anyone else getting carried away up here.’

She glanced at his hand, a glimmer of annoyance at her cheek. ‘What about you, sir? Feeling alright after yesterday?’

He grinned. Flexed his fingers and then put them on her arm.

Her breathing seemed to slow a little, her shoulders dropping. She gave a grudging nod and a grin flitted over her lips. ‘Okay.’ She flicked a glance around her. ‘Maybe we should be asking why come here? Maybe Ryan was an inmate before he was –’

He shook his head. ‘Closed about ten years ago. Ryan was orphaned when he was three. A year later.’ He looked at the mullion windows and black stone left to gather moss; no idea what it had been originally, too big for a farmhouse; a grange, maybe. But it had functioned as an orphanage for almost
