Chapter 19
The field turned into a plasma globe as bolts of electricity struck the ground. I clamped my hands over my ears, the hairs on the back of my arms standing on end, and watched in horror as the hell storm raged over the reapgrubs, the royal guards, and Kalyll himself.
Oh, shit! What had Damien done? He had unleashed hell on the Seelie Princeâson of Eithne and Beathan Adanorin. Kalyll was going to fry like a French fry, and we would die in Elf-hame, probably tortured and dismembered by the King and Queen themselves.
I was considering whether to run or face my end when the reapgrubs began dropping to the ground like mosquitoes in a zapper. The red lightning coursed through everyone in the field, including the Prince, but it only affected the creepy devils.
Their hideous bodies twisted and jerked. Their screeches became louder and carried an edge of desperation. They went on convulsing for a long minute while the royal guards stared dumbfounded, cautiously backing away from the agonizing little beasts.
Suddenly, a hush descended over the field, and only the rustling of the crops in the field disturbed the thick silence.
Ladresel rose to his feet, his mouth wide open in surprise, his blond hair swaying about him as he helped Damien to his feet.
The Prince and his guards sheathed their weapons and went around helping their fallen friends, kicking the reapgrubs off their injured bodies.
I sidled next to Damien. âFor a moment, I thought youâd gone crazy, but you did it.â
He responded with a grunt as he watched the Prince walk around the battlefield, helping make the wounded comfortable, patting shoulders, and saluting with a fist to his heart.
We stayed put at the edge of the field, but every few minutes, the Prince glanced our way as if to make sure we were still there. Ladresel and Misra stayed by us, casting glances in Damienâs direction. At last, Prince Kalyll pulled away from his guards and headed our way. His movements were lithe and self-assured. His armor glinted in the sun, making him look like some sort of god. I was struck by his beauty all over again. I had first seen him in Yalgrunâs shop a few weeks ago, but his chiseled face was imprinted in my memory.
When he stopped in front of us, Damien inclined his head respectfully. âPrince Kalyll Adanorin, what an honor.â
The Princeâs cobalt blue gaze drifted from Damien to me, and what he said next left me as speechless as the last time Iâd seen him.
âAntonietta Sunder, I find myself confused and grateful for your presence here. You and your friend have spared us a difficult if not impossible fight.â He placed a hand on his chest and bowed. âI am grateful for your help. May you introduce your companion?â
âUm, uh, y-yes, sure,â I babbled. âThis is Copper Mage Damien Ward.â
Kalyll bowed again toward Damien. âI must repay your help.â
The mage and I exchanged a glance. Well, wasnât that convenient? I could only hope that the price of what Damien had done for the Prince matched that of what weâd come to request.
