CHAPTER TWELVE - RYLEE
They didnât need the X-ray machine after all. With the forklift finally arriving, they used it and began to lift the soldier into a flatbed. Rylee felt the sting of being pricked by a needle herself between the toes of her right foot. No.
âSTOP!â she shouted.
Everyone stopped what they were doing, freezing in place. But it was too late, the soldierâs eyes bugged out, then shook, then went lifeless. He was gone. The uniformed officers holding the soldier steady on the lift stood frozen, looking around at each other for guidance. The forklift operator sat, brow furrowed, leaning out of his seat to get a look at the soldier. Rylee felt nothing from the soldier, but she felt the overwhelming shock and despair from the group of officers and forensics team members around her. It was all over in much less a minute. No one moved; they all just stood there in shocked silence.
âFuck!â Reese shouted, the first one to break the tense silence, crouching down and running his hands through his hair.
Meisner moved next, approaching the soldier and taking a look around. He said, trying to rationalize, âThere mustâve been a pressure plate that triggered the injection.â His head shook back and forth.
The Captain cleared his throat and said despondently, âMeisner, get your team and process the scene. Take the body back to the lab after. Iâll call the Mayor. Heâs going to want to hear about this from me.â
It was over so quickly, thought Rylee. The poison took him so fast. At least it was painless. Rylee, as an empath, felt what he felt. Not as strongly as she had in the car before they found him. No, that had been immersive. She had been unintentionally sucked in by his pain and fear. His intense feelings and her focus on finding the Toy Maker had allowed her to sync up with his mind without even trying. She didnât get pulled into the minds of others like that often. Usually only when there were intense emotions, and usually the only things strong enough to pull her in involved death in some way. Fear of death and the instinct for survival were the only things that pulled her in by accident â before she got pulled into the Toy Makerâs mind anyway. She could immerse herself in someoneâs head like that on purpose, but it involved a lot of focus, skin-to-skin contact and trust. It left Rylee vulnerable, so she rarely let herself get immersed in someone else like that. At the scene, she had her guard up to prevent any accidental linking. She was on edge about it now and didnât need to have what looked to the outside world like a dissociative episode in the middle of a crime scene. The only person she had ever tried mind-linking with was her dad, the only person sheâd ever been able to trust totally. The only person who knew her secret.
When she was fifteen, her dad Jim and she had been training daily to hone her psychic skills and self-defence.
