She had never felt so safe and protected. So utterly peaceful.

In her bed, Rapunzel snuggled into Rodrigo, for even in sleep he held her. His chest was pressed to her back, his knees drawn up behind hers, and his arm curved firm around her waist. Surely, this was one of life’s great comforts—to sleep in the embrace of the one who has fucked you so wonderfully.

Rapunzel sighed. Usually, it was when she woke in the middle of the night that she felt her loneliness the most deeply. With the darkness obscuring the distance to the ground, she would stand on the wide sill of her window and contemplate the freedom of death. Loneliness plagued her days as well, but the shadows of the night turned it into a looming presence that sometimes felt unbearable.

But not tonight.

Tonight she lay in Rodrigo’s arms.

Tonight she knew things she’d never known, and felt things she’d never felt.

She was a different woman now—one whose hunger had been fed.

One whose heart had been filled.

She stared at the dim shadow of her shuttered window. She would never again stand on that sill—never again contemplate death. For to do so, would be to kill her memories of Rodrigo. And, once he left, though she would never know if he were alive, or dead upon some distant battlefield, she would spend a lifetime waiting for his return.

Rapunzel’s eyes suddenly stung, so she closed them and snuggled closer to Rodrigo.

She was more a prisoner now than she’d ever been.

She was unlike any woman he’d ever met.

Propped on his elbow, Rodrigo studied Rapunzel as she slept.

Laying on her back with one bare arm curved over her head, her face was turned toward him. In the warm morning light that illuminated the high chamber, she looked incredibly beautiful.

Of course, there were many beautiful women at court—women who practiced and presented their beauty with such scrupulous attention to detail that they were like walking works of art, their primary purpose to be admired and desired…which they were.

Rapunzel, however, had none of their expertise—no coy flirtatiousness, no studied indifference, no practiced poses or scripted wit. She had none of their trappings either. Rodrigo swept a loose strand of golden hair back from her brow. From the moment he’d entered the tower, he’d noticed that no jewels sparkled at her neck or fingers. No beads, embroidery or gilded trim decorated her yellow gown. And she had no elaborate headdress of steeples, padded wings and veils to augment her beauty, her stature, or her incredible hair.

She had nothing but herself.

She was nothing but herself.

And she treated him like he was nothing but himself.

She didn’t call him Prince or Royal Highness. She called him Rodrigo. And while she very clearly wanted him, she wanted him only for what he brought to her as a man.

It felt strange to simply be a man.

And it felt strange to be with her. She made him think of things he didn’t normally think of—made him feel things he didn’t normally feel.
