Chapter Fourteen
Goldilocks In A Hurry
Lucy Wilkinson didn’t answer, even after that, but there was a change in her; and for the better. The slackening of Rollison’s pressure began to take effect. Her fear didn’t go, but something was added – she looked as if her mind were beginning to work, and she wasn’t so rigid with terror. Even her voice was steadier, and she no longer spoke as if it hurt her; but she fingered her throat again. It was a graceful throat, slender, white. She seemed oblivious of the fact that she was sitting in her bra and panties, with one nylon fastened and the other gangling from below the knee.
‘I won’t wait all night,’ Rollison said, and his voice grew harsher.
He glanced at the hook behind the door again. The woman did too, but without her earlier tension.
‘Honestly,’ she said hoarsely, ‘I don’t know. I might be able to find him.’
‘You’d better find him.’
‘Too right, I had,’ said Goldilocks, and gave a nervous little giggle. ‘But I’d better warn you.’ Yes, she was beginning to think again, and there was no evidence yet that she was just a dumb blonde; she didn’t look a fool. ‘You don’t know Bunny. How did you get on to us?’
‘Just warn me about Bunny.’
‘He’s a bad man to get the wrong side of,’ Goldilocks said. ‘He can be a devil, and—’
‘Listen, Goldy,’ Rollison moved forward, clutched her curls, got a good hold of them, and pulled; not hard. He forced her head back, and to see him she had to look straight up into his face. ‘I don’t need telling that Bunny’s a killer. I know what I’m doing. You find Bunny.’
‘Well, I’ll try.’
Rollison laughed; and from behind the scarf, it must have sounded harsh, ugly.
‘You do better than try, find him. Listen, my pretty.’ He tugged her hair sharply, then let her go. ‘I know you, your name, where you’re likely to go. I can pick you up any time I want you. I’ve two witnesses, and could find another two, who saw you go into Jane Dale’s room at the apartment block in Bayswater. I’ve got the noose right over your head, and it wouldn’t take long to pull it tight. If Bunny found you dead, he’d start thinking pretty fast himself. I don’t care how I persuade him, I’m going to make him cut me in. Get all that.’
‘Okay, sport,’ she said. ‘I said I’d try. It might not be easy.’
‘I’ll cry for you while you’re trying so hard,’ sneered Rollison. ‘It’s getting on for seven. At ten o’clock tonight you’ll make sure Bunny’s on the Post Office steps, the George Street Corner. I’ll recognise Bunny when I see him. Ten o’clock. Got that?’
She nodded, vigorously. ‘If I can’t get Bunny, I’ll be there myself, that’s a promise.’
‘And what would you and I do, then?’ Rollison demanded sardonically.
She moistened her lips, glanced towards the door and the hook again, and then smiled more freely than she had since he had turned on her.
