“Interesting way to spend an evening. The rest of us were simply battling torrential rains and downed trees and power lines.”

“Yeah, well, you know how it goes. Some of us lead more exciting lives than others.”

“To each their own. I’ll take floodwaters over bullets any day. Do you think there’s a connection between your thief and Duquette?”

“I don’t know. What sort of M.O. was used on the apartments?”

“Strictly smash-and-grab—in through the patio window and out the same way. All ground-floor apartments.”

“Our guy went in through a kitchen window by the door. If our people find any nine millimeter shell casings, or dig something interesting out of one of the walls, I’ll be giving you a call back.”

“Do that.”

“Do the Canadians think Kathy Walsh is dead?”

“Let’s just say they’d like to be shown otherwise. There were no bullet holes in the apartment.”

“Glad to hear that.”

“You’ll keep me informed?” Tony asked.

“Naturally. And be sure to let me know if Kathy Walsh turns up.”

“Will do. Your shortstop and his fiancée wanted to take Livia Walsh’s body to Stony Ridge for burial, but we can’t release it until her daughter is notified.”

Fiancée? The word sliced past everything else. “Do you mean Gavin Jarret was there in Saratoga Springs?”

“Yeah. He’s still your shortstop, isn’t he?”

“What fiancée?” Wyatt demanded. But he knew, even before Tony began speaking again.

“Oops. I didn’t know it was supposed to be a secret. Do me a favor and don’t let on that I told you, okay? He and one of the Hart girls are engaged. Good-looking lady. I’m not sure how comfortable I’d feel about marrying someone with an identical twin. But that’s just me. Her being an heiress is a nice perk, don’t you think?”

Wyatt clenched his jaw so tight it hurt. “Is Jarret still there?”

“Nope. They were going to drive to Canada to see if they could locate the daughter. I told them the police were already looking, but I got the impression the Hart women don’t hold us dedicated law-enforcement types in high esteem.”

“They don’t,” he said flatly. He couldn’t believe the wrench of betrayal clawing at his guts. “How long ago did they leave, Tony?”

“Yesterday.”

That took a minute to sink in. “What time yesterday?”

“Ten, maybe ten-thirty. Is there a problem?”

A huge problem. Leigh had been with him yesterday. It was possible, of course. She would have had to drive like crazy, but she could have left Saratoga Springs at ten and made it back to Stony Ridge in time for him to spot her standing in front of Gavin’s office yesterday. And if she and Gavin had had a spat on the way home, it would explain her mood and that lost expression on her face when he’d first spoken with her.

He cursed out loud, remembering that kiss last night. If it hadn’t been for Lucky and R.J., and a supreme show of willpower on his part, he might have done far more than kiss her.

“I gather something I said disagreed with you,” Tony was saying in his ear.
