Marcus paced in front of the fire with growing impatience. He was a man of action, and sitting here waiting for word was unbearable. And once that word arrived, even should it be in their favor, it would merely signal that hours from then, they could perhaps take action. He figured they had at least six hours of the day before their plan could proceed.

He spun on his heel and faced Simon, his sergeant picking his nails with the tip of his dagger. “Are you interested in going for a ride?”

Simon leaped to his feet. “Does Jerusalem smell like ass in the summer?”

Marcus laughed. “It does indeed.”

“Just what did you have in mind?”

“With everyone safe here, I’d like to survey the damage to Thomas’ home, and then pay another visit to that clothing shop. Perhaps there is something we’ve missed that might be revealed in the light of day.”

David stepped forward. “May we join you?”

“No, I need you to stay here in case the message arrives. Should it, you know where we’ll be. Have Jeremy come find us.”

David bowed. “Yes, sir. May I suggest you take Tanya with you? She needs to get outside, and she can prove to be a good deterrent should the need arise.”

Tanya, lying on the hearth in front of the fire, perked up at the mention of her name. “No, not this time. Discretion may be required. Prepare our horses. We’ll be leaving at once.”

“Yes, sir.” David and Jeremy left the room as Marcus and Simon climbed the stairs, each heading for their respective rooms. A servant at the end of the hall stepped forward.

“Do you require anything, sir?”

“Yes. I’ll need you to help me into my armor.”

“Absolutely, sir.” The man followed Marcus into his room and expertly assisted him as capably as any squire.

“Did you serve in the Crusades?” asked Marcus.

“I did indeed, sir. For five years. My master was unfortunately killed, and I returned home with the others. Sir Denys was kind enough to offer me a position.”

“You serve him well.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Marcus inspected his armor, raising his hands above his head and twisting from side to side, making certain he had a full range of motion. He nodded to the man. “Good work.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Marcus left his room and returned to the sitting area, finding it empty. He grabbed the cushion cover with Prince Louis’ coat of arms, then headed for the stables where David and Jeremy had the horses prepared. Simon joined them a few moments later, struggling with one of his arms.

“Jeremy, can you look at this? The fool who dressed me has no experience.”

Jeremy attended to his sergeant, resolving the problem within moments. Simon made a full rotation with his arm and grunted his approval. “Much better.”

Jeremy smiled. “You’re welcome.”

Simon gave him a look. “The expectation of manners can get you a backhanded thank you.” He held up his fist to emphasize his point. Jeremy scurried away in mock fear, making the final adjustments to the saddle of the horse he had been tending.
