Mac and Dara brought coffees and breakfast sandwiches for everyone, which was gratefully received by the two sleep-deprived detectives.

“Your shooter didn’t have time to clean up the brass,” Detective Dickerson said, holding up an evidence bag. “Although I doubt that he cared.”

“Any prints?” Dara asked.

“No, not surprisingly.” He handed another evidence bag to Mac. “And we have a slug from the booth. Elite Match Grade .308 Winchester.”

“Sniper ammo?”

“Could be. I spoke with an officer over at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range for the Naval Academy, and he said that three-oh-eight would be good for that. We’re running ballistics, in case we ever find a gun.”

“Anything else?” Dara asked.

“Nothing so far on the truck, and equally quiet on the hospital front,” said Norris. “Neither of which is a surprise.”

“The picture of the short guy in O’Reilly’s hasn’t registered with anyone yet either,” Dickerson added.

“Have you sent it over to the FBI?” Dara asked. “Maybe they could run it through facial recognition.”

“It’s on my list,” said Dickerson. “So—that’s where we’re at. Now… how about you two tell us what this is really all about?”

“You got a place we can sit down and drink these coffees?” Mac asked. “It’s not a short story.”
