CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

I’d set the alarm for 6:00 a.m. but awakened at 5:45. I used the room phone to call Lindsey’s cell number. It was 7:00 a.m. in Denver. She picked up and it was good to hear her voice.

“Hey, sleuth, I was wondering if you’d call this morning. You didn’t keep your promise to call last night. You have too many California girls to chase?”

“Hi, Linds…I’m sorry I didn’t call---I couldn’t. Things have gone to hell here.”

“Are you in trouble?” I could hear the concern in her voice.

“I don’t know if I’d call it trouble…deep shit comes to mind.” I told her most of what’d happened without going into detail about the shooting at the Embassy Suites. There was no need to worry her any more than she already was. I did tell her I was probably a fugitive from the FBI although I’d only been in protective custody and not charged with any crimes. “They aren’t going to like that I’m still here and hunting for Feng.”

“Why are you still there? Can’t they run this Feng guy down and put a stop to it?”

I’d trapped myself by not telling her everything about the shooting. “You know what, Linds? I feel like I owe it to Hank, or maybe Martie Remington. It’s not as personal to the FBI as it is to Hank…and I guess to me.” That probably wasn’t fair. Martinez had taken the killings of her agents pretty hard.

Lindsey was quiet for a moment. “I can see that. You should stay and see it through, and you need to be careful. I know you’re probably sick of hearing me say that, but I mean it. Those guys sound bad, I mean, killing the girl here and now the FBI guy…” She didn’t finish the sentence as she completed the thought. The count was actually three, although she didn’t know about Riggs, and I didn’t know what had happened to Gail Porter either.

“Thanks for understanding, Linds. I’ll try to keep in touch though I’m not going to use my cell for a while just in case the feds can trace it.”

“You better call me anyway. I’m counting on it. Come home to me as soon as you can.”

“That’s a promise.”

I hung up, poured a cup of coffee, and dialed Tom Montgomery’s office.

“It’s about damn time you checked in.” Tom was in his normal frame of mind. Hedges had once told me Tom had a very even personality…he’s pissed off all the time. “Those FBI killings are all over the police wires and you’re right in the middle of John Nelson’s. What the hell happened out there?”

I filled him in on everything. He listened without talking until I was finished. “So what are you going to do now? You need some help?”

“How well do you know Harry Thornton?”

“Pretty well…why?”

“I’m going to need some eyes and ears and I’m not going to get them from the FBI or the local cops. Harry seems like the kind of guy who’d like to
