Killiney Bay was beautiful as always. Bernadette was thinking of it as she drove to work on Monday morning. The long stretch of beach was her and Eve’s special place. Sitting on that beach, in the early part of their relationship, Bernadette had finally been able to let go of the spectre of her past with Rebecca. A past which had haunted her. Rebecca was the woman who had ruined her life for so many years and made her afraid of love. Rebecca who had cheated on her multiple times, kept her in a state of high anxiety, and finally left her with a broken heart. Eve had healed her, made her heart like new. She learned to love again. She realised, deep down, she had allowed her past to control her life. Eve had helped her to see it. On Sunday, she and Eve walked hand in hand, down the beach. The sun had been shining and their laughter was taken by the wind to mix with the cries of the gulls.

She had left for work early, to inspect the CCTV installation, and brief the staff on the new security arrangements. She parked the car and found the door to the office shut, and she was unable to push it open. The new security was definitely in place. There was a new entry phone, and she noticed the CCTV cameras above the entrance. She buzzed the door and it was opened by a man she did not recognise, a security guard.

“Hi,” she said, “I’m Bernadette Mackenna, I’m the owner of this law firm.”

“Ms Mackenna, come in, I’m Raj Prasanda, one of your new security personnel.”

“Hi, Raj,” said Bernadette smiling. She shook his hand.

He was around thirty years old, with a close-cut beard, a nice black suit, white shirt and tie. He certainly looked capable, and Bernadette presumed he was from the same firm as Carragh.

“I’ll be here all day, and in the night-time, a colleague will take over and mind your premises. When any of you needs to go to your car, I can accompany them for their safety.”

“Thank you, Raj, that’s good to know. I’ll get Juanita, our receptionist, to show you where everything is, when she gets here.”

“For sure,” said Raj, “I’ll be glad to meet her.”

At that moment Juanita walked in and Bernadette was able to perform the introductions. Juanita seemed rather taken with him and batted her eyelashes in his direction. She told Bernadette firmly that she was perfectly capable of making sure he was taken care of. Raj offered to show her how the CCTV worked and the door entry system.

Bernadette made her way upstairs and sent an email to all her staff telling them there would be a special meeting at around ten a.m.

Imogen arrived shortly afterwards and brought in their coffees. Bernadette automatically moved over to the sofa where they now customarily had their morning get together.

“Well, that Raj is a bit of a dish, isn’t he?” said Imogen sipping her drink.

“He’s handsome for sure, and Juanita seems taken with him,” Bernadette remarked dryly.
