Chapter Five: On Fire

About halfway back to the station, my cell phone rang. I had been in a part of town notorious for bad reception so I wasn't surprised. I picked it up and looked at the screen to see how many calls I had missed. I frowned, sliding my thumb across the screen when I saw it was Jant calling me.

"Getting a little clingy?" I teased.

"No," Jant replied. "I just got a phone call. Remember the arrow that killed that guy in the truck?"

I sighed, "Yes. Why?"

"I got a partial print off of it," Jant said. "And guess what?"

"What?" I asked.

"It didn't match either of the kids." I could tell Jant was smiling just by the tone of his voice.

I recalled the poor kids that had snuck out to shoot birds and squirrels with crossbows. It was obvious they had no clue what they were doing. The razor tipped hunting arrows they had been meant for much larger game... Unless the wanted to skip a step and shred the meat before taking them home. "Oh really now? Who did they match?"

"I don't know who yet," Jant replied. "But I do have a what."

I furrowed my brow, "Stop screwing with me and tell me, Jant."

"I thought you liked me screwing with you," Jant teased in the voice he knew would make me tremble. We had been so busy with the case, we hadn't had a chance to be together since the night after Jones' body was discovered. It had left me starving for him but I staved off my urges. It had become harder though when he had kissed my forehead before we headed out to question Harrison about the truck.

It got even more complicated when I took his keys from his pants. Though it had only been ten minutes since it happened, my hand still tingled with the memory of his muscular leg. "Jant!" I said sharply. "You know what I mean."

"I guess I do," He sighed. He became serious again, "It matched one of the partial prints I pulled off the sword."

The news stunned me and made me swerve to the oncoming lane. I pulled back into my lane just as another car came over the hill ahead of me. I blinked, "Wait... THE sword? From Jones' case?"

Jant snorted, "Have there been any other sword based crimes around here?"

"Holy Hell. This huge," I said.

"Yeah," Jant said. "Only thing we need now is a name."
