She pressed her lips together as though that would in some way help take away the discomfort that suddenly swamped her. ‘I didn’t know how to soothe him after his bad dream. I tried…I talked to him, I thought I might manage to distract him, but I didn’t even begin to make first base. He only wanted you. In the end I held him close and he fell asleep in my arms, but it just brought it home to me that I’d never be any good as a parent. I had this churned-up feeling inside, and I felt so helpless. I realised that I don’t know the first thing about relating to young children.’

‘Why are you being so hard on yourself? It sounds as though you followed your instincts, which is what we all do in the end. You did the right thing in holding him. We may not know how to handle every situation, but we all have the urge to love and comfort one another.’ He drank from the mug. ‘Isn’t that something we all learn from the bond we have with our parents?’

She gave a light shrug. ‘I wouldn’t know about that. I never had that kind of relationship with mine.’

He frowned. ‘I don’t think I follow you. Are you saying that your mother wasn’t a caring sort of person?’

She shook her head. ‘Not that I recall. She was always too busy with her own interests to take any notice of what was going on around her. There were lots of rows between her and my father, and I had the feeling that I was in the way most of the time.’

‘There must have been occasions when she was affectionate towards you?’

‘Possibly, but I suspect that they were few and far between. Anyway, when I was eleven she walked out of the family home and never came back.’

Theo stared at her. ‘You’re not serious?’
