CHAPTER 44

Morillo would have to spend all day in the infirmary. His injuries were not serious, but the doctor wanted to run some tests and ordered him to rest. To make sure he obeyed, he put him under the care of a veteran nurse who did not take her eyes off him.

It wasn’t long before he simulated a deep sleep, spiced with convincing snoring, which made his jealous caretaker lower her guard. During a brief oversight of his nurse, he picked up his clothes, and faking a physiological emergency he locked himself into the bathroom, from where he escaped through a window.

He had no time to waste; his life, Agnes’ and that of many others was at stake. He headed for the police station and went straight to the storage room where they kept all belongings from detainees and victims.

He requested the personal effects of the accountant Calvet, whose body should already be on his way to the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine.

The contents of his pockets were rather scarce, only one key, a few blank folded sheets of paper, a watch, and a handkerchief.

Why would he carry blank sheets of paper? Did he mean to write a letter? He unfolded the sheets, two blank pages showing the letterhead of the insurance company where he worked. One had something written on the back, words carelessly scrawled in pencil, hard to read because the strokes were weak.

He approached the lamp to take a better look. It seemed to read "Morillo Maison". What could that mean? It was obvious it was a message to him, but what?

Presumably, Calvet had asked him to meet at the Palace of Fine Arts to give him some clue, when the murderer caught him and blackmailed him to act as bait to lure Morillo into the building. That Calvet had been gagged, supported this second hypothesis.

He went in search of subinspector Aromí. He needed to have someone he could trust minimally, and Aromí fit the profile, albeit also minimally.

He found him sitting at his desk and waved at him from the lobby for him to join him on the street.

Once outside the police station, they went to a coffee shop in a discreet alley nearby and sat at a table.

“Morillo, I thought you were still in the infirmary. I don’t want to ask you why the secrecy but, why the secrecy?" Aromí asked, firing first.

"Please don’t ask me questions. I'm on to something and is much bigger than it looks.”

"It must be, for Lieutenant Botell to be so hysterical. He has been asking about you non-stop for the last few days.”

"I can imagine. I cannot talk to him now. I'm sorry but I cannot explain why, although I'm almost certain he is involved in all this somehow.”

"Involved in what? What are you talking about?"

"About the serial murderer running loose in Collserola since almost a year ago. About an organized plot to cover up his murders, which involves very important people in Barcelona. Many entrepreneurs have disappeared under mysterious
