12. Spinning Around

“Where’s Dade?” I asked one of the other bartenders breathlessly.

“In the wine cellar, sir, getting—”

“Hi, Dade.”

“Uh . . . hi, Jonathan.”

The air temperature in the wine cellar was kind of cool, I guess to keep the bottles at just the right temperature. I didn’t know what’d come over me, but all of a sudden I’d just had to find Dade. My mind was sort of a jumbled mess, but I’d gone with my instinct.

Dade looked a little confused as to why I’d barged into the wine cellar, but after a few seconds of silence he actually cracked a little smile. He was so hot, oh my God—about my height, a little more muscular, and he had this amazing black hair that fell over half his face, leaving only one sparkling emerald eye completely visible. And then there was that cute, crooked smile.

That was it.

I stepped toward him, slipped off my wig and beret, and kissed him. Actually . . . kissed him! Turns out, it was a lot like kissing a girl (tongues are tongues, I guess), but the difference was that when our mouths met and started kissing intensely, wetly, as if they were made to do it, it felt thick, heavy, electric. His lips and tongue against mine sent miniature shock waves through my body, down my entire frame, to even my toes. It was amazing. My first kiss with a boy.

He pulled away for a second and said, chuckling, “What about your girlfriend?”

I smirked and said, “Oh please, honey,” and, emboldened, grabbed a handful of that beautiful hair at the back of his head and pulled him into my face for more. I could have done this forever—I hardly knew the guy, but I just all of a sudden needed that first kiss. I didn’t want to make him my boyfriend. I just wanted him to kiss me, dammit. Maybe it was the alcohol or the pot. Maybe it was watching Laura and Carrie kiss. Or maybe it was a little act of rebellion against my fake girlfriend/sometimes-dictator Laura. But I just had to do it.

I don’t know how long we kissed—a minute? two? ten?—until I heard:

“Love . . . at first sight.” Kylieminder #3.

I spun around to face Laura, a little embarrassed, a bit giddy, and a lot turned on. But even more disappointed.

“Hey, Laura,” I said.

“Miss Schulberg,” said Dade.

“Don’t you have some wine to bring upstairs?” Laura asked Dade pointedly.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said, then grabbed the box at his feet and quickly walked off. When he passed Laura, he turned around and gave me a little wink.

Laura stormed up to me, looking intensely furious, and practically foaming at the mouth. “Just what the fuck do you think you’re doing? Huh?”

I was through with this shit. I’d just kissed a guy. I could do anything! “What did it look like I was doing, Barbie? Are you blind? Blind Barbie?”

“Where do you get off pulling that crap on me? We have a deal.”

“There is no rule stating that I can’t make out with guys,” I answered defiantly.
