The Reel

Around 1500, a dance including a “hay” or interweaving figure-of-eight or “reeling” movement was imported from France into England and Scotland and thence to Ireland. The English hay-for-three and the Scottish reel-for-three derive from this common origin. In the sixteenth century and seventeenth century, we find references to the “Irish hay” in English popular drama and song.
