Blair

Alec shouted, “SWAT team is on the 28th floor—ninety seconds left!”

Blair’s mind reeled. The shooters storming up the stairwell weren’t the only imminent danger—she saw the tipoff that death was also coming from above.

The media and police helicopters that had been drifting overhead tipped their hand. Almost in unison, they increased their altitude until their rotors were almost churning across the thick blanket of gray clouds. Blair knew what that meant: they were acting on orders, clearing a restricted altitude for aircraft with priority clearance.

She caught a glimpse of them moments later in the sky to the southwest: a pair of black helicopters flying in formation, slipping in and out of sight between buildings. The pilots were trying to keep as many high rises between them and the target rooftop as they could, delaying their visual exposure to the rooftop bandits for as long as possible.

Only now they were so close that the pilots were running out of options to remain unseen.

“Eighty seconds left!” Alec shouted.

And if the teams aboard those helicopters didn’t shoot or arrest them, then the shooters storming up the stairwell would.

Blair saw Sterling watching the sky to the southwest as well—he’d seen them too.

And yet he did nothing.

She told him, “Those aren’t news choppers, Sterling. Whatever your exit plan is, now’s the time.”

He didn’t answer at first, and that pause made Blair infinitely more scared. It was clear by now that Sterling didn’t have some personal helicopter coming to spirit them away—and even if one magically appeared, it was too late.

Every second was one step closer to death or capture, another flash of time they wouldn’t get back.

And Blair’s fear of heights was amplified further by the fear of capture, the knowledge of what awaited. It wouldn’t be like the previous night. The handcuffs that the cops put on wouldn’t come off until she was inside a cell, and the next time she’d see Sterling and Alec would be in some unwinnable and highly publicized court proceeding.

Alec yelled, “Seventy seconds!”

Sterling grabbed her arm with his free hand and stared forcefully into her eyes.

“The cameras are on us. I’ve got to make this look convincing. You’re now my hostage, understood?”

She nodded. “I’m ready when you are.”

She searched his eyes for some indication that he wasn’t going to abandon her, that he had a way out. Had he been toying with her this entire time? What possible way was there out of this mess?

Without releasing her arm, Sterling holstered his pistol and dragged her toward the edge of the roof. Alec followed, and the two men began stripping off their haul in unison.

First they unslung their bags of cash, dropping them at their feet. Then they each removed their black hiking packs.

Alec hastily grabbed his bag of cash and strapped it across his back, then repeated the process with Sterling’s bag. Why wasn’t Sterling carrying his cash anymore?

“Sixty seconds!”

It didn’t matter—either way, those hiking packs were apparently staying on the roof along with whatever was inside them.

Or so she thought.
