Contact work transforms the body. It strengthens, sensitises, transforms. The body is required to discover the imagination within it, and that imagination is far bigger than that which our brains can supply. Decroux had a walk in which he instructed his students: ‘La marche sur le dos de Vénus’ (‘The walk on the back of Venus’). A walk of supreme delicacy where the foot practically caressed the ground. Its atmosphere was of extraordinary concentration mixed with total gentleness. The ground became alive. It took a long time to perfect, and was a good walk. But an actor who can walk on another actor literally wakes up that person, and real dialogue ensues—the bodies speak. Contact work is a total work, and as two is greater than one, the benefits double. It further transforms the meaning of ‘listening’ for the moving actor.
