For a very long time a huge amount of antisemitic propaganda was fed to people, hundreds of books of antisemitic content were published with horrendous claims, starting with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and ending with the blood libel. It was essential that the Russian readers amass would have an explanation regarding an enormity of Judaic culture of the past 2–3 thousand years. And therefore our books, in contrast with all this antisemitic garbage, . . . provided an explanation of what is Yom Kippur, where Judaism in general comes from and so forth. Therefore, the positive side of these anti-religious books was to explain, calmly, correctly, scholarly, what all this Judaic culture was about. This was our goal. But in the context of anti-religious revolution happening in Russia, it could only have been presented within the anti-religious frame.10
