“Let’s get some business out of the way first,” he said.

Lola’s eyes flew open. The car was speeding down I-5, windows rolled down and a balmy breeze buffeting them. They were driving through verdant farmland, with the starkly beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains glittering on the horizon. She had been keeping to herself so far this morning, but she felt good. For someone who had been attacked twice, spanked once and carried upside-down through the streets of San Francisco, she felt amazingly calm.

She had expected it to be unbearably awkward riding in a car with Mr. Jackson after he had spanked her bottom. In fact, it was just the opposite. Ever since he had cleared the air over breakfast, she felt oddly close to him, as though they had been through something significant together.

“Item Number One,” he said, “I want us to move forward with charges against Officer Hornby. I want that menace off the streets yesterday. SFPD will want to keep this quiet even more than we do, so I’m not too worried about exposing you. I’ll put you on the phone with my legal team later today so they can take down your statement.”

It all sounded very official. Lola looked out the window at the greens and browns of the landscape outside her window. She was used to her parents handling legal matters. It made her nervous having to decide these things herself.

“Will I have to see him in court?”

“We can settle out of court. As long as SFPD is willing to string that bastard up by his balls—” He cut himself short. “Pardon my French,” he drawled. “The point is we’ll make certain Officer Hornby never has the chance to do something like this again.”

“Okay,” she said in a small voice. How could she say no to that? “Thank you, Mr. Jackson.”

He threw a sideways, amused glance at her. “You can call me Nolan, Lola. It’s okay if I call you Lola, right?”

The way he said her name gave her warm shivers every time. “Of course, Nolan,” she said faintly.

“On to Item Number Two—your friends Caleb and Zinn. I’ve got a gal flying up to Boston to check out everyone associated with the East Star Café. My tech team is looking into SFPD’s arrest records from last night. Hopefully they booked Zinn after we left him hog-tied at the party, which means we can ID him and start tracing his connections to Nathan Elbaz and Joe Polanski.”

Lola sat up straighter in her seat. “I barely know Elbaz and Polanski. Why are they targeting me?”

“It’s not personal,” Nolan said smoothly. “This is about your mama and the campaign.”

A call came through on his cell phone. He swiped the screen and set his phone on top of the vintage dashboard. “Howdy, Keira, I’m with Lola Randall. You’re on speaker.”

“I am so sorry to interrupt, Mr. Jackson and Miss Randall.” Nolan’s assistant sounded young and sexy, with a soothing voice that implied she could make her boss’s every problem disappear. “I’ve got Nathan Elbaz on the line.
