Part Nine

It was one of Jones' proudest moments.

An ex-slave himself, who proudly fought for the victorious North, now the owner of a prosperous Negro bar, not to mention his first pair of slaves, white slaves, who through either blind luck or chance, had been married in their previous lives.

Indeed Jones' only regret was that he hadn't been the one to actually geld the Confederate soldier. What a thing that would have been. The Negro would have given anything to see that smug, superior expression crumble as the blade of Justice removed the last remnants of the white man's manhood. Jones would have paid twice the price for Stuart for that opportunity. But still, the expression in Stuart and Nicolette’s eyes as they realized who their new Master was, for the rest of their days —that was worth all the money in the world.

That day, with the hot Southern sun beating down, before departing the auction blocks, a few ground rules were laid out.

For one, in his infinite wisdom, Jones didn't see any reason to allow his slaves to hang onto their previous names. The thoughtful Negro was deeply concerned that this would only be a hurtful reminder of their shared past on the luxurious plantation. So by the end of the day, instead of "Stuart and Nicolette" there was only "Boy and Girl."

Secondly, and naturally, neither one of them would be allowed to refer to Jones as anything other than "Master." Eye contact with Master was also forbidden. And should one of them get the funny notion of trying to escape their new exciting lives serving their new Master, Jones promised that the other would surely pay the price at the end of his whip. While illiterate, Jones was a clever Negro, and understood that owning a married couple had certain advantages. Not that Stuart and Nicolette were married any longer. After all, slaves couldn't be married. Slaves were just slaves.

Jones promised them that it wouldn't be a bad life though. Soon Boy and Girl would come to love their positions in the world.

When they returned Boy/Stuart would be dividing his time between working for Jones' bar and being loaned out to a local Negro farmer who occasionally needed extra "skilled hands" at picking cotton.

On the other hand, Girl/Nicolette would never leave the close scrutiny of Jones' clever yellow eyes. The Negro had big plans for the blonde beauty. Just thinking about her new future caused his thick ebony pole to twitch with excitement. When they returned, Girl would be working in the bar, serving the Negro patrons, not unlike all the colored girls that had taken care of her family in the splendor of her Southern girlhood.

For the amusement of his patrons, Jones had already come up with a surprise for Girl. He'd already commissioned a specific uniform for Girl to wear every day. It was not the typical simple cloth dress and apron that servants normally donned. But rather the garment was quite similar to one of her
