NOTE: Nutritional information was not available for this establishment. However, we have provided some Best Choices that fit in with the South Beach Diet nutritional principles. Because we do not have specific data for these dishes, talk to your server if you have questions about the ingredients in a dish, and be especially vigilant if you are on Phase 1.
Italian food in a relaxed atmosphere is the basic concept at Romano’s Macaroni Grill. Pizzas are made before your eyes in a wood-burning oven, and all the other dishes are prepared to order in the exhibition kitchen. A custom sound track of Italian music and the occasional strolling musician liven up the experience. An extensive wine cellar complements the food. If you’re on Phase 2 or 3, a glass or two of wine is permissible.
BEST CHOICES
The extensive menu at a typical Romano’s Macaroni Grill features more than 35 Italian specialties, all served in generous portions. Among the appetizers, those on Phase 1 should choose a small garden salad with dressing on the side. If you’re on Phase 3, you can have the Mozzarella alla Caprese (mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinaigrette). For pasta lovers, Romano’s Macaroni Grill is one of the few chains that serves whole-wheat pasta (the preferred type on the South Beach Diet)—but only in the form of penne. Try the Whole-Wheat Penne Arrabbiata (penne in a classic spicy tomato sauce) topped with grilled chicken or shrimp. The portion is large, so plan to share or take some home with you. Among the grilled items, the Chicken Portobello, the Grilled Halibut, and the Grilled Pork Chops are all fine. Other good entrées include Chicken Marsala or Veal Marsala for Phase 3 dieters. Your server will happily substitute sautéed spinach or grilled asparagus for pasta, rice, or potatoes. In the Sensible Fare section of the menu, the simple Grilled Salmon and Mediterranean Shrimp are the best options.
