Chapter 48
Brooke woke with a jolt, stiff and sore. She wasnât in her bed or her bedroom. Confused about her whereabouts, and how she had ended up on the floor, Brooke struggled to get to her feet. Her clothes were torn and soiled with dirt and blood, her blood. Her sensible shoes were no longer a pair, the right one was missing. As the fog from her confusion and the double nightmare slowly lifted, Brooke remembered her narrow escape from the demon in the hidden corridor. She brushed off some of the dust from her scraps of clothing while steadying herself against the wall with her left hand. Brookeâs right hand stung from her broken nails and a large cut across her palm. She tore off what was left of her right sleeve and wrapped her hand as best she could.
Moonlight filtered into the room through one of the two windows on the far side of the small room. Brooke could have sworn she had passed out in a much larger room. She had no recollection of how she had gotten into this little room. Perhaps, I crawled here in my sleep, she thought. She shrugged it off, figuring she had much bigger problems. Is there still a killer demon stalking me? Was it lurking around the corner, waiting to suck all my blood out of my body? Thatâs stupid. A vampire is not chasing you. Then what the hell was that thing then?
Trying to shake the thoughts of the nightmares and the killer demon from her mind, Brooke looked around for her knapsack, before remembering she had surrendered it in the secret corridor with the remains of her jacket. Her stomach gurgled in hunger. She had not eaten since breakfast. All her snacks and supplies were in that bag. Brooke knew she couldnât risk her life by going back for it. She realized that perhaps it had not been such a good idea coming on this little adventure on her own. Well, thereâs no point bellyaching about it now. You need to find a way out before you starve to death, or are eaten by the demon thing. âWell, at least one of us would eat,â Brooke said, laughing aloud. Her nervous laughter sounded eerie, bouncing off the walls in the small room, forcing Brooke to stop abruptly before she scared herself.
Brooke decided to explore the room now that she felt steadier on her feet. Lucky for her the moon was bright and it illuminated the room enough for her to see everything clearly. The room contained a small bed, a side table, a small bench, a chest with four drawers and a wardrobe. In its time, the room would have been simple but cute, suitable for a young child or a maid. Brooke walked across the room, choosing to look in the chest of drawers first. She wiped her hand along the drawer fronts and transferred the grime to her tattered trousers. Then she cautiously pulled open the first drawer, unsure what to expect.
