Chapter 5

From then on, even as Cory predicted, the lessons became much more intense and demanding. Although there were no overt punishments, Driz felt his master’s disapproval and disappointment each time he fell short. And such occurrences were frequent. To see a bit of scorn or displeasure in Cory’s expressive eyes hurt like a slap. He found he wanted nothing more than to please this demanding teacher and make him proud. By slow degrees, he improved.

Nights and mornings were another story. Although it did not happen every night, it was frequent enough Driz never had a chance to get horny enough to jack himself off as he had often done once his relationship with Aryjon had ended. Each time, he felt closer and more attuned to Cory, until he began to wish they’d do more than merely blow each other and then snuggle and kiss before falling asleep. Perhaps further acts were a reward he had to earn, though.

He read a passage in one of Cory’s ancient tomes about an intimate act called The Feat of the Wand by which mages could build a strong bond enabling them to draw on each other’s power and combine magickal and mental energies with formidable synergism. Apparently, it worked between either a male and female couple or two males. Since there was no way he knew for females to penetrate one another in such an exchange, perhaps they were not able to achieve this conjunction. He wondered, yet he dared not ask. Other than his sister and his mother, he knew few empowered women anyway. And it certainly did not impinge on his situation.

Matters rolled on peacefully for three fortnights. Driz sensed his powers were growing. He accomplished more and more of the exercises Cory prescribed on the first or second try rather than struggling and failing many times before he could execute them. He’d learned in school that the traditional apprenticeship would be a year and a day. He also knew that a skilled mage could manipulate time so a single day might fly by in minutes or drag on for hours and hours, while the sun stood still and it seemed the earth ceased to turn. If Cory was doing this, Driz could not discern it; however, Cory was one very skilled and powerful wizard. Would such control be obvious or even perceptible to anyone at all? Maybe not…

Then one morning, Driz snapped awake very early, jolted out of his slumber by a searing mental scream. It was no dream and it certainly did not come from within him. Someone was trying mightily to reach him and that person was caught up in terrible fear and horror!

His thoughts immediately turned to his family in Melcorth. Instinctively, he felt one or more of them were in danger and perhaps even threatened with brutality or gravely injured. Frustrated by the distance and the tenuous link he’d managed to build with them in his absence, he bolted upright, wracking his brain for a way to aid them, even to find out what was wrong.
