ARRIVING AT THE OLD House just in time, I circled around to the front of the house as Robert approached. I put my glasses back on and threw the jacket, its pocket containing the folded beard and wig, into a space beneath the porch.

“Robert,” I said. “We’ll need to stay out here. Nathaniel just arrived and he’s talking with Milton.”

Milton had left a bottle of rum and two glasses on the back porch, so I led Robert there. The stairs to the back porch were less often used, as they seemed on the verge of collapse. Still, they held fast as Robert followed me.

“A drink?” I asked him.

“No thanks, but don’t let that stop you.”

“It never has before,” I said, pouring myself a glass.

I pulled a cigarette out of the pack I kept tucked in my shirt pocket. I offered one to Robert, but he wordlessly declined. I struck a match, which was instantly extinguished, before lighting another.

The wind battered the side of the Old House, and setting the trees singing. Robert glanced upwards at the violently swaying branches with a vague look of unease.

We sat closer than we might have otherwise, so we could avoid raising our voices to be heard above the storm. It seemed Robert would not risk being caught by Nathaniel any more than I would.

“What did you find out?” I asked.

“Well, her first name is Sophia, but the last name’s Kapur. It says so on her driver’s license and a few letters I found hidden in a chest of drawers by her bed.”

A week ago, if someone had told me that the person I had trusted most, the person in whose hands I placed everything, was living under an assumed name, I would hope to be at least taken aback. I think I always knew something was wrong, but perhaps I misremembered.

Now, I felt nothing but budding excitement at the possibility of an explanation.

“So, any indication why Sophia Kapur took up a position at a near-abandoned mill complex in the woods?”

“None that I could find. It doesn’t seem like she’s one for many material possessions. Aside from a considerable mess of papers, her home’s as spartan as they come.” Robert chuckled. “It may have been the same as any other house, but I’d swear the place was made entirely of sharp angles. It’s like her personality bled through the walls.”

“Well, it’s a start,” I said.

“What’s next?” Robert asked.

“I guess tomorrow I’ll go to the library and try to find out what would bring Sophia Kapur to the Old Mill site. It’s the only place other than Sophia’s office that gets internet.”

“I’d like to go along for that trip.”

“It won’t be all that interesting,” I said.

“I know but, when it comes to Sophia, this is more personal.”

Robert slipped a fingertip beneath the neck of his t-shirt and pulled the fabric away from his skin, as if the light cotton was suffocating him. He saw me watching the gesture, and he let the cloth go, before settling back in his chair

“Alright,” I said.
