30 By the time this statue was made, Tiberius had secluded himself on Capri, and was seen by the citizens of Rome only through his image in statuary and coinage. The ageing emperor was aware that many were openly yearning for Gaius Caligula to succeed him. (Alinari)

Suddenly everything became urgent. There were conferences among those already present, and dispatches to be sent to generals and armies. On 15 March it was announced that he [Tiberius] had breathed his last. Gaius Caesar [Caligula] set out to take possession of the Empire, accompanied by a rejoicing host of followers. Then suddenly came the news that Tiberius was recovering, that with strengthening sight and voice he was calling for food to revive himself. This caused universal panic. People ran in circles, everyone feigning either grief or ignorance. Meanwhile Gaius Caesar sat in stunned silence, having gone instantly from wild exhilaration to deep apprehension. Macro was undaunted. He ordered everyone out of the entrance hall, and had Tiberius smothered under a huge heap of clothes. So died Tiberius, in the seventy-eighth year of his life.
