Julie shivered in the cold.
She wasnât sure how much longer she could take it. The irony of the fact she was crouched below a shower head was not lost on her. All she needed to do was hit the button above her, and heated jets would gush over her body.
But Sven was still out there, gathering the bodies. She heard him wading through the water, grunting as he retrieved the bodies, lifting the corpses over the side. The last time she had chanced a look, there had been six of them in a pile of dead flesh.
This never happened when I fucked the guys from AC/DC, she thought, and almost laughed. She clenched her fist and shoved it between her teeth to stop herself. She was losing it. Her whole body trembled with fear. What exactly was the best-case scenario here? That they would remove the bodies and go to bed, leaving Julie to sneak out unnoticed? It was possible, she kept telling herself. Entirely possible.
She sniffed. Her nose tickled.
Donât sneeze, donât sneeze.
She held her breath and looked up at the lights. A woman at the record store she worked at once told her that staring at a light stopped sneezes. Julie had thought she was full of shit, but dammit if the tactic didnât work every time.
The pool shifted mightily, followed by the sound of water dripping onto tiles. Sven must have gotten out. Was he finished with the bodies? She wanted so badly to look.
No, too big a risk.
Footsteps padded along the side of the pool. They were heading away from her. A metallic squeak, then a firm clunk. The door? It had to be.
The pool fell dreadfully silent.
Julie turned onto the balls of her feet and crept towards the end of the shower area. She listened, not wanting to rush out, but also not wanting to waste any time.
It was quiet. Dead quiet. This was her chance.
She had to take it.
Heart pounding, she poked her head around the edge of the shower entrance. Her eyes fell first on the bodies. They resembled rag dolls, the limbs loose like old rubber. One of the faces was turned towards her, and she met the girlâs gaze. Her face was pure white, a perfectly round bullet hole in her forehead. Julie remembered the girl. They had spoken in the parking lot before getting on the bus. Her name was Missy, or Melissa, something like that. They had shared a smoke and talked about the concert, and about which member of the band had the best ass, and about how the girlâs sister was grounded and couldnât make it tonight. They had laughed about how jealous she must be, sitting alone in her room listening to Slaughtered Lambs albums and crying.
She was the lucky one.
Julie glanced around. Sven had indeed left. But where had he gone, and for how long? Should she make a break for it? No, she decided that was too risky. He could come back any minute. Best to wait until she was sure.
