CHAPTER EIGHT
Batty Jonesâ Son
THEY flew the remainder of that night, all the next day, seeing only sea. No steamers; nothing but water. The weather favored them, and they struck neither storm nor headwinds.
At seven the following evening, they sighted Vancouver Island in all its greenness, and at nine they were swooping down upon the airport to the south of Seattle, on the tide flats.
They were tiring, nerves jumpy with the incessant roar of the engines. They marveled that they had stood it so well this far. But there had been two of them, and they had had the robot working. They had slept sitting, but slept fairly well.
At Seattle they paused long enough to get a hot meal. Then they headed east. They tried time and again to check the whereabouts of Ewell and MacTaggart, but they failed.
Fifteen hours from Seattle to New York, having the wind behind them. All night and all day.
At four-thirty that afternoon they landed at Floyd Bennett Field, letting down their landing gear for one last time.
For the last three hours Pam had been sleeping. She brightened now as they coasted to a stop before the operations office.
A swarm of people, spreading out across the field like a wide black sheet, besieged their plane. Police held them back. A car mercifully came and took them directly out of the ship.
Craig was there, waiting for them, his bushy hair standing straight up, red face alight with joy.
When they were left alone in the administration building, Craig scooped Pam into his arms and held her for a long, long time. He smoothed her rumpled yellow hair.
âIt was swell,â said Craig, and there were tears in his eyes. âI . . . I never knew before, but for days Iâve been thinking about you, worrying about you. They were buying up my stock, trying to ruin me, and all the time I was thinking Iâd be left with nothing if you failed.
âAnd then suddenly I realized I wouldnât be really ruined. I could still do something, anything, but more than that I knew I . . . knew I had you, Pam. I guess Iâve been so busy making money I forgot about my girl.â
She was beaming, all weariness vanished from her. This was what she had wanted. This was what she had been waiting for.
The crowd was seeping into the room and they moved on to Cautionâs office. Caution swept the accumulated papers from the desk with one single thrust. They scattered out across the floor in a grand mess. He slumped down in his chair and put his feet on the desk, closing his eyes for a moment, as though he steadied himself.
âCraig,â said Caution, without noticing that Craig was puzzled and aghast at this sudden easiness of manner, that Craig was watching that down-drooping mouth and that squinted eye. âCraig, I think youâre going to have to get a new general manager.
