Chapter Twenty-Eight

TO GET SID A PLACE TO CRASH for a few hours didn’t take a great deal of effort. Jack simply turned on the charm for the motel manager.

As far as Tessa could tell, the manager wasn’t happy about the semi-conscious ghost hunter on her lobby couch, but then, she would be paid good money with or without a room provided.

Tessa watched Jack’s body language — leaning in, rolling his shoulders a bit, confidently signing paperwork — and she relaxed, knowing that Sid’s overnight stay was secure.

Poor Sid.

All he wanted was video of a ghost and a cable TV career. It wasn’t a bad lifegoal. A bit niche, but not bad. She laid a blanket over his legs and whispered, “good night,” hoping she hadn’t inadvertently portrayed a whispering spirit in his dreams.

Jack strolled up and in a gentle voice, asked, “Do y’all see his car keys? I have to move his truck to a proper spot, or the local constabulary will tow it.”

The keys were easy enough to find.

Looking over Jack’s shoulder, to see where the manager was, watching her TV of course, Tessa grinned and gave a solid nod.

“He’s had a rough time. Thought he’d like to find his truck in the morning. Something tells me he’s gonna’ be feeling the sunrise pretty good.”

“I’m not convinced I won’t.”

Jack drew a circle with his finger, an indication she recognized as meaning he’d take a look around the truck.

Tessa sidled up to the manager and her TV, ready to provide a distraction with some conversation, freeing Jack to use whatever time he needed to search the truck.
