Chapter 14

THEY MADE it to London in good time in spite of the horrendous morning traffic. He’d tried calling Konrad several times, but it kept going to voice mail, which did nothing to settle his nerves. By the time the Bentley turned into Harley Street, Preston’s gut was churning. It was fifteen past ten, and he went into full panic mode when he spied two police cars as well as an ambulance. Pierce parked the car as close as possible, and Preston stepped out on shaky legs. He made his way through the small crowd that had gathered at the bottom of the steps leading up to Carlisle’s office.

He was stopped by a bobby who was half his age but had already mastered the intimidating scowl meant to scare off the most hardened criminals.

“What is your business here?” he asked, blocking Preston as he tried to squeeze by.

“I need to see Dr. Carlisle. What’s going on?”

“Are you a patient, sir?”

“Yes, I am.”

“I’m afraid the doctor is indisposed right now.”

“What do you mean?” Preston asked. Peering over the man’s shoulder, he saw a couple of uniformed attendants pushing a gurney toward the entrance. The person strapped on was none other than Rayne Carlisle. Blood from a head wound trickled down the side of his face. Preston slipped past the copper before he had a chance to react.

“Rayne,” he said, bending close. “What happened?”

Carlisle’s normally pale complexion was ghostly white, which made the bright red blood even more striking. His blue-veined eyelids flickered open, and he frowned when he saw Preston.

“Go away,” he slurred.

“Who did this to you?” Preston whispered urgently. “Was it Kon?”

Rayne nodded.

Preston thought his heart would give out, but he rallied and stood tall as the ambulance attendant barked, “Get out of our way please.”

The bobby inserted himself between Preston and the gurney. “You have no business here, and if you don’t back away, we’ll take you in for questioning.”

“I had nothing to do with this.”

“All the more reason to go home. You can call the doctor’s office in a few days to get an update on his condition.”

“It looks serious,” Preston remarked. “Can you tell me anything about what transpired here?”

“I’m not at liberty to say.”

“Who can?”

“Didn’t you say you were only a patient?”

“I’m also a friend.”

“Then you should have Dr. Carlisle’s contact information.”

“I doubt he’ll be answering his phone any time soon,” Preston argued. “Why don’t you just tell me where they’re taking him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re as useful as a shoeless pony,” Preston snapped. He whirled and headed back toward the Bentley.

“Follow the ambulance, Pierce.”

“Yes, sir.”

Unfortunately, that was easier said than done. The flashing lights and loud screech of the emergency vehicle gave it the right to bypass traffic signals, whereas Pierce had to follow the rules and lag behind, stuck in commuter gridlock. Preston wanted to take over the wheel, but he knew he wouldn’t fare any better. All he could do was clench his jaw and pray that they’d end up at the right hospital.
