CHAPTER 49

Oliver

Pete’s brake lights flared a few times before his GMC pickup disappeared into the darkness.

Alex tugged at the ropes securing my Christmas tree to his Land Rover’s roof. “I’ll bring you back to your car. Kai and I will meet you at your house with the tree.”

I didn’t like that plan. “We’ll take it from our car.”

“Can we swing by the McDonald’s in Park Falls on the way? I’m starving,” Kai asked Alex.

Alex opened the front passenger door. “As the lady wishes.” His grin widened as I yanked at the rear passenger door.

We’d been driving long enough to take the chill out of the car before Alex asked, “You enjoy the sledding?”

“Best part of the night,” Kai said.

“What do you think of Wisconsin’s winter?” he asked.

“I started to hate snow after someone got me lost in the woods.” She jerked her thumb in my direction. “But Lukas and you reminded me how fun it can be.”

I envisioned granite all around me. When Kai was hurt, she lashed out verbally. Rarely needed to throw something. Not when she fired buckshot words.

“Oliver?” Alex asked.

“Yeah?”

“Do you or don’t you?” He sounded annoyed, like he’d already asked the question.

“What?” Maintaining the granite shield while angry and thinking about Kai required most of my attention.

She fiddled with the radio, hunting for a station she liked. “Pretty sure he doesn’t have a tree stand.”

He made eye contact in the rearview mirror. “Guess we’re boring you.”

“I’m a little worn out. Worked all day, hiked most of the night.” With some quick outdoor sex in subfreezing temperatures. Then sledding. “Cut me some slack.”

“I’ll pick a stand up at my parents’.” He drove down the path that chains and tire treads had pressed into the snowed-over, dirt road. He came to a stop beside our lone car.

“Thanks.” I let my walls of granite melt away. Who cuts down a tree without a stand to put it in? If I were a cartoon character, I would slam my head against a desk.

Silence. No reply in my head. I shifted forward to kiss Kai. She leaned in to change the radio station.

“See you soon.” I patted her shoulder.

“It might take us a while to eat and find a tree stand,” she said.

“We should be there in an hour or so,” he said.

I got out of the car and slammed the door hard enough to rock the vehicle.
