DEBRA FORD SLOWED TO a jog. Kenneth her driver waited dutifully beside the Town Car. Without a word, he gestured to the vehicle.

She needed no explanation.

He opened the passenger’s door.

She handed the driver Baker’s pistol. “Keep an eye out.”

Tossing the laptop case on the backseat, she got in and closed the door. “Is my ex-husband dead?”

She slowed her breathing and uncapped a bottle of water.

The man in the front seat watched her via the rear-view mirror.

She noticed his bandaged nose immediately. Actually, it was hard to miss.

“Shot him myself, Princess,” Gene Thornton said. “His body was incinerated. Unfortunately, your children won’t be able to schedule a viewing. Hope that isn’t an inconvenience.”

Debra Ford took a swig of water. “Gene, you look like crap. Do I know the guy who mauled you?”

“Princess, you just did me a favor and shot him.”

She slid her dark hair out of a ponytail and fluffed it out. “The men in my life better stop calling me Princess, or I’ll wipe the earth clean of them.”

Thornton laughed. “You have my package?”

She shoved the laptop case toward him. “Gene, none of this better come back to me.”

He unzipped the bag to verify its contents. FBI evidence labels plastered a laptop.

“Debra, your resourcefulness never ceases to amaze me.”

She unzipped her fanny pack and slid out a two-inch dagger, while keeping her gaze on Thornton’s reflection in the mirror. “I hear someone beat you to Parker’s lab. That’s unfortunate. And very costly.” She pursed her lips and blew him a kiss. “You’re not bi, are you?”

Thornton faced her with a mischievous flicker. “I was about to ask you the same thing, Princess. I feel double-crossed.”

“As do I.” She leaned forward, mere inches behind the front seat. Her hand with the dagger rode up the back of the seat, ready to strike. “Parker’s research equipment carries a market value of thirty million. I had a buyer in France offer double its value.”

He sighed. “Well, Debra, that’s capital we’re both cheated out of.”

She shook her head. “You think this Frontier is worth it?”

Thornton nodded. “I’ve stocked the institute with enough guinea pigs to make a real go of things. Their initiatives are promising. And for the two of us, the payoff will be to die for.”
