Chapter 9

Thirty-five minutes later, after a nice scenic ride, Luke and Lisa pulled into the next community. Following their GPS, they pulled up at what was once a grand old house that now serves as the office of a local newspaper. Luke parked in the small yet ample parking lot across the street, and they made their way across to what used to be a massive and elegant Victorian-style three-story home.

As soon as they walked in, Luke and Lisa saw an older woman sitting behind a desk, “Can I help you?” She asked.

“Yes, we’re from Smugglers Cove, and we were told to come here to talk to someone named Tessa.”

“Regarding what?” The secretary asked.

“The Sarah Harper murder,” Luke replied.

As soon as she heard this, the secretary turned and called out over her shoulder, “Tessa, somebody needs to speak with you.”

“I’m busy,” a voice called out from another room.

“It’s about Sarah Harper,” the secretary replied.

Suddenly, the disembodied voice snapped, “I’m on my way.”

“That always gets her attention,” the secretary said with a smile.

Moments later, a short, younger woman with a somewhat stocky build, long brown hair, and glasses walked around the corner and said, “I’m Tessa. What is this about Sarah Harper?”

Luke asked, “Is there somewhere where we can talk?”

“We can go in our conference room. It’s small but quiet and a little more private,” Tessa replied as she led them through the office.

As Luke and Lisa followed closely behind Tessa, Luke made eye contact with Lisa and pointed at the two tattoos on each of Tessa’s arms as she walked through the office, her arms swaying from side to side.

After walking down a small hallway, Tessa showed them into a room with a conference-type table in the middle and chairs around it. “Have a seat,” Tessa said.

As all three sat down, Tessa asked, “So, what’s this all about?”

Luke replied, “The murder of Sarah Harper.”

“I gathered that,” Tessa shot back. “Do you have information for me or what’s this about exactly?”

Luke replied, “Well, I’m Luke Wolf, and this is my wife, Lisa. We just recently purchased the lighthouse in Smugglers Cove and—”

Before Luke could finish his sentence, Tessa interrupted, saying, “Wait a minute, Wolf. As in Christof Wolf?”

“Exactly,” Luke replied.

“Okay, now you have my attention,” Tessa said as she leaned forward, resting her arms on the table in anticipation of what Luke was about to say.

“Well, Lisa and I recently took ownership of the lighthouse and are turning it into a bed and breakfast. During our remodeling, we found something that could possibly shine a light on the young woman’s murder, and we were told to come see you about it.”

Tessa replied, “Well, I don’t know who told you to come see me, but you’ve come to the right place, that’s for certain. Sarah Harper was stabbed to death in 1942 and found several days later on the beach very near your lighthouse. Of course, there was no DNA or anything back then. As far as I know, nobody even looked for any fingerprints.
