CHAPTER NINE

SHE WAS STILL thinking that same thing three hours later. Only now her arm throbbed, she had a headache, and muscles she hadn’t even known existed ached from the attack. But those weren’t the reasons she was still awake. It wasn’t even Noah’s presence in the room down the hall, though she couldn’t stop thinking about him. What really worried her was the fact that Lauren’s file and the directions to Finders Keepers were the only things missing from her briefcase. Only one person would have any interest in that file.

Noah.

But if he’d seen it, why hadn’t he said something? The troubling question had no answer. If she weren’t so tired, maybe she could think. Nothing made sense anymore.

Sky drew on her robe after pacing the den floor for several minutes. Doug had insisted she take the spare bedroom, but Noah finally agreed to let her use the couch when she pointed out that she might need to sit up if her arm bothered her too much.

Her arm was the least of her worries. She made her way as silently as possible through the dark house to the front door. Limpet startled her by appearing from somewhere to join her, his tail swishing happily. She touched his head hesitantly, not sure if she should let him outside at this hour or not. “Shh, Limpet. Get down.” He looked at her with what she fervently hoped was a wide doggy grin and thumped his tail. “Missed out on obedience training, huh?” Well, who was she to tell this massive beast where he could sit?

“All right, but you are not a lapdog no matter what you may think. Next to me, dog. Not on top of me,” she whispered. “My arm hurts and my lap’s too small.”

As if he understood perfectly, he curled beside her and settled his large heavy head in her lap with a sigh.

“Thanks. Are you trying to be sympathetic?”

She stroked his head and he sighed again, this time in obvious contentment. The night air had a decided nip to it, but that was okay. She was oddly unafraid sitting out here in the dark despite what had happened. Probably because she knew Noah was only a yell away. His presence was definitely reassuring. She breathed in the scents of the night and closed her eyes, rocking gently back and forth and scratching behind the large dog’s ear.

What would her life have been like if she’d chosen another path? Would she be struggling to make a living so her daughter could go to
