Twenty-Three
Successes and Failures
IT TAKES WEEKS, BUT IAIN and his team, headed by a dedicated girl named Nadia, eventually help locate the property Deaneâs intelligence report mentioned.
âBetween the New York attacks in 2001 and this year, the number of primary investigative targets has risen from 250 to 800. But thanks to your heads-up, we may have won this round,â Iain congratulates them.
The security services and the police work tirelessly with the information Deane supplied, and with Iain and his teamâs ongoing help, MI5 foils a significant threat. They seize the Islamist bomb factory.
They have protected the public, and unsung, they quietly continue to divert other national security threats. In the loop, Deane recognizes his sonâs contribution, but at times Iain, wonders if leaving academia was the right choice. Knowing nothing of all the potential threats, he had slept easier at night, and how well he did his job was more easily calculated.
âYouâre fighting the good fight, my boy,â Deane tells him over the phone.
âI donât know, Dad. It feels bad that our work and all the successes go unrecognized. But let just one of the attacks succeed, shining a light on the dangers, and everyone starts to scream and point fingers in accusation of the supposed failure.â
âThe report I gave you indicated it was an ongoing battle. Itâs a thankless task, but take pride in the achievements you and all the other men and women make. Youâre saving lives,â Deane tells his son. âIâm proud of you, Iain.â
The next day, like knocking over skittles, in a joint operation by MI5 and the Metropolitan Police, several properties are targeted. It is a great day for the Secret Services, one in which they are re-invigorated, as one after another, they seize locations, property, and men.
Beginning at dawn, they descend, surround one building after another, breaking down doors. Inside, they discover disposable ice packs containing ammonium nitrate, scattered everywhere, thousands of them.
âIdiots, how could they store it like this? Amazingly it hasnât gone off already. This stuff is so highly explosive, it could ignite at any time,â the head of the unit says. âThis fertilizer is a key ingredient for homemade bombs,â he adds.
Iainâs colleagues arrest a British citizen of Asian origin. Like cockroaches, others scurry to escape. Outside, the exits are blocked. The men are taken, but still undiscovered, one quickly dials a direct link to Karim. The man, in his mid-forties, alerts him, and informs him about the raid.
Taken into custody, he smiles as he is read his rights. For succeeding in warning the Wolf, he or his family will receive a bonus. So what if he goes to jail? This is Britain. It is not such a bad place to be; many of his friends are already there. When he is arrested, suspected of terrorist-related activity, he has already dumped his burner phone. But they have foiled the plot, the factory has been found, and it is no longer available for the intended purpose.
Karim puts down the phone; he is angry.
