"What's that?" Stone asked casually.

"The police report on my father's so-called accidental death," Hastings said.

"So? What does it say?"

"That he was accidentally killed."

"Do you have any evidence to the contrary?"

"Not yet," Hastings sighed. "But I'm hoping to find some in this report."

"How? You said it says it was an accident."

"Yeah, but I don't believe the report. That's why I'm reading it."

"That doesn't make any sense," Stone said with a frown.

"Neither does the report. There isn't anything here to indicate that it wasn't an accident."

"So how will you find any evidence that says it wasn't?"

"I'll let you read it," Hastings grinned. "You're supposed to be smarter than me."

"Don't bet on that," Stone grumbled. "Give it to me." Hastings handed over the report, and Stone leafed through it.

"Forget it," he said, and tossed the report back to Hastings. "You'd have to interview all these people and find one who lied. Either that, or you'd have to interview somebody who isn't in the report and hope he tells you the truth. If the truth is any different from the testimony of the other witnesses, that is, provided they lied."

"How would I find people who aren't in the report?"

"Not by reading the report," Stone said. "You'd have to know who isn't in the report, which means you're wasting your time reading the report, which is what I told you."
