THE NEXT MORNING, Dan rolled toward Rachel, only to find empty sheets. He lay there awhile, basking in the memory of the prior evening.

Despite all that had happened, despite Rachel’s disturbing revelations, he felt at peace.

It was a strange and unfamiliar sensation.

In the kitchen, he found Rachel’s mark, as usual—a pile of filthy dishes stacked in the sink. How could one woman go through so much china, just for breakfast? Grinning, he cleaned up, made a fresh pot of coffee, and checked his watch.

Rachel would be starting her autopsy soon. Now, it was his turn to do his part.

Rachel’s theory about doomsday genes continued to haunt him. It made sense in a strange way.

Had Carl Jameson made the same connection?

If Dan could gain more insight into Carl’s research, then he might have a better understanding of his clues. To do that, he needed to contact the source, the one person in common who tied their two destinies together: their Santa Fe syncrenomics instructor.

That would not be an easy task.

The man was notoriously difficult to reach, was isolated, and eschewed many of the world’s modern conveniences. He had a cell phone but seldom checked it.

Dan could only try.

To Dan’s shock and amazement, he got an answer on the first ring.

“Hello, mouse! What took you so long?”

Dan chose to address his mentor by his formal designation. “Professor Proudfoot, how did you know it was me?”

“A thunderbird landed on my windowsill yesterday and told me you would call.”

Dan shook his head. Here we go. “So I take it the weather’s been bad in your area?”

“A mere shower. Nothing like the storm that threatens your future—”

“Uhhh, how do you know where I am, exactly?”

Ben let out a signature cackle. “My boy, how do you think I take measure of the world? The weatherman has much to share.”

Dan swallowed hard. Ben had figured out everything already. If his and Rudi’s handiwork had been so transparent, he may have miscalculated their window of anonymity. “Was it that obvious?”

“To the eagle, yes. To others, I cannot say. I am truly sorry for your loss. My heart is heavy with sorrow for dear Jameson. He was one of my favorites, next to you, of course.”

“Thanks, but I barely knew the guy.”

“Ahh, but that is not true. You two share a cosmic link. After all, you are the Hero Twins. Gucumatz, heart of sea, and Hurricane, heart of sky. Your destinies were always ordained to merge. I knew that from the first time I met you both.”

It seemed like Ben was laying it on a bit thick. “I’m sorry, professor, I don’t feel very godlike right now.”

“That comes from actions, not thoughts.”

“Whatever. What I can tell you is that I’m trying to learn more about the man. These recent events and Carl’s death are linked, and he tried to leave clues. Ones I’m trying to decipher.”

“Then how can I help?” Ben replied.

It was obvious to Dan, even through the satellite phone, that Ben’s lighthearted tone had taken on more weight.
