ANOTHER KEY: THE TEACHER MUST BE INTERESTED IN ME AND MY SUCCESS

I recently returned from a camping trip with members of our church. Our group included 37 of us, including clergy, adult leaders, assistants and young adults aged 14 through 18. Although we participated in many activities, we had plenty of time in between to sit and talk and interact. I had expected groups of teenagers to gather, talking with each other. What I, and many other leaders did not expect were the consistent and persistent clusters of kids around certain adults. When I asked the kids why certain adults caught and kept their attention and others did not, they did not say they liked those adults more. It was because they were “…interesting,” “funny,” “talked about me,” “had cool things to say.” In other words, the adults were interested “…in me and my success.” I do not think this phenomenon is unique to kid/adult interactions.

I have heard it said that the most pleasant sound a person can hear is the sound of their own name. And, in my speaking and teaching I have tested the premise and found it to be true. If your own name is important and interesting to you then how much more important are your own passions, interests, and desires? Great teachers must do two things in this regard:

1. Be SINCERELY interested in those you teach and lead.

2. Show that interest in the way you teach.
