⢠Watch a Movie â¢
Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened: If youâre one of the millions of people who look at Instagram and imagine that you and/or your social life are somehow deficient because youâre not a supermodel drinking a rum cocktail on a tropical island (or whatever), this movie will help disabuse you of this life-stealing notion. As you watch, ask yourself: Who would I rather be: one of these rain-soaked guests, objectified models, or flashy con artists? Or Dreamy George and his dream princess?
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? 1957 is perhaps not the best year for movies, but Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, starring the hypnotic Jayne Mansfield, is definitely a gem. Itâs also incredibly instructive when it comes to recognizing the difference between achieving success in the eyes of the world and assessing success by your own personal measure of authentic joy. I will warn you, however, that the sexism portrayed in this movie runs deep. If youâre easily offended by such things, try to remember that the movie was a product of its time, and think of watching it as an honest investigation into the very real history of chauvinism. (If sexism is really triggering for you, you can skip it, but do be aware that it is the quintessential Jayne Mansfield movie, and she was one fascinating womanâso maybe make a note to come back to it one day.)
Less Than Zero: This iconic 1980s movie starring Robert Downey, Jr. goes into some pretty dark places, so if thatâs not your thing, youâll probably want to skip this one. The reason I recommend it here, though, is because it clearly illustrates the discrepancy that can exist between the appearance of flashy wealth and exclusive parties and the actual experience of them. As you watch it, remember Dreamy George. Would he trade his invisible kingdom for the mansions and modeling and expensive drugs portrayed in this film? Nope! Never. Never ever ever.
