At nine o’clock, Andile dashed into rehearsals in the old hall, realising with a quick glance that Thuli was not there. Gordon started putting them through their paces, but Andile was distracted, constantly looking at the door, wondering when she’d arrive.

Finally, halfway through the morning, he got up the courage to ask Gordon where she was.

Gordon fixed him with a beady eye. “She called in sick, citing a mental health day. Get on with it, Sebe. You’re all over the place today.”

And it was another gruelling session. They worked all the parts of the text that were sticky, trying to find solutions.

“There’s no way the guy would say, ‘Don’t do this to me.’ It’s the oldest cliché in the book,” Andile complained. “I know this kind of man, he grew up in a ghetto, he’s rough. He’s not going to beg her.”

“So change it,” Gordon said, throwing him a pencil.

And Andile did. By lunchtime he had practically rewritten the heart of the play.

Gordon pursed his fat old lips. “Yup,” he said, “it’s good. Much better. Go get some lunch. Half an hour only. Everyone back here by two.”

The rest of the day dragged on. Andile kept checking his phone, but there were no messages from her. Eventually, he couldn’t take it any more, and sent her a WhatsApp message:

You OK? Doing a Cinderella on me?
