After Bekah left, Amanda stood up and walked around to the opposite side of the schoolhouse, wanting to be alone. The small building was bordered by thick woods. She could hear the laughter and squeals of her classmates playing, but the schoolhouse shielded her from seeing them. Her classmates. She shook her head and leaned against the building, the back of her prayer kapp pressing against the white siding. None of the kids at this school were her real schoolmates. She thought about her friends back in Paradise. They had started school over a week ago. Did they miss her? She hadn’t received a letter from anyone since she left. Maybe they didn’t care if she were there or not.

She wiped the sweat from her forehead. Even though she was in the shade, it was still hot outside. She turned and looked down the driveway to the road that ran past the schoolhouse. It would be so easy to leave right now. She could do the same thing that boy had done earlier today. Jacob. At least she thought that was his name. He’d just walked away from school and nothing happened. She could do the same thing. She doubted Bekah would do anything about it. Her cousin was pretty mad at her. Amanda wouldn’t have to worry about anyone coming after her, at least not until Bekah got home from school. Maybe this time she would actually make it to the bus station. She still had her money tucked in her sock. She never went anywhere without it, just in case. She could buy a ticket and be on her way to Paradise. It was a perfect plan.

But she shook her head. Her plan wasn’t perfect, and she knew it. She would never be able to find the bus station, not on her own. Leaving Middlefield was a stupid fantasy, just like believing her father would come get her soon or that her mother would come back. Each night she prayed that God would help convince her mother to come back home. But with each day that she didn’t hear anything, her hope dimmed. Did God even hear her prayers? Did he notice her crying at night? More and more she began to doubt that he did.

None of that changed how she felt about being in Middlefield, though. She might be stuck here, but she didn’t have to like it, or do things with Katherine and Bekah, or make friends. Even if she thought Ester was very nice. If things were different, the two of them probably would be friends.

However, she did have to go to school, and Fraulein Byler would be calling the class in from recess in a few minutes. She started to head for the other side of the building when she saw something out of the corner of her eye. A flash of movement in the trees in front of her.

She walked toward the woods, gripping her lunch box close to her body. “Hello? Anyone there?” After walking a few yards farther, she decided to turn around.
