Chapter Seven

SHANE WAS IN his office talking on his cell phone when Bayley found him. She'd dressed and recovered somewhat, although her skin still tingled with the aftereffects of having two intense orgasms in such a short span of time. Waiting for him to wrap up the call, she sat in one of the high-backed leather chairs and admired what Shane had found for his office.

The walls on either side were lined with tall bookshelves, filled with old leather books and various curiosities that might belong to a nineteenth century traveler. Two paintings filled the space on either side of the door, and a low cabinet was home to several crystal liquor decanters. The room was the sort of den that many men might dream about having, and she could tell that apart from a few of his own books and the computer setup, Shane had left the room with all of this decor in place.

That was the ultimate downside to her new writing room. She hadn't spent more than a few minutes in there after opening up the window, but it had been clear that the room contained absolutely nothing but a rough stone floor and a few windows. She'd have to look around the house to see if there was a desk and some bookshelves she could liberate. After all, if they weren't using some of the other rooms, then what was the point of leaving them fully furnished?

"Who was that?" she asked when Shane put the phone back down on his desk.

"Our internet provider. We're locked in for tomorrow afternoon. I was just trying to figure out the difference between Ultra High Speed Personal and Mega Business High Speed. Seems like one is just a more expensive name for the same download speeds."

"Oh, that's interesting," said Bayley, grinning widely.

"No, it's not interesting. What did you do?"

"Me? Do? Nothing much." She got out of her chair and walked to the bookcase, playfully spinning a large globe in its copper frame. "I just discovered a hidden tower room on the top floor of the house."

"Wait, you actually found a secret room?"

"Yes, and it's so perfect for my writing room! I want you to see it right now. There's nothing in there, of course, because it was all sealed up. I figure I can just take some furniture from one of the other rooms we're not using and move the pieces up there. It's not like...".

"Okay, okay, show me already." Shane hopped up and followed her out the door.

They emerged onto the third floor hallway, and Shane took in the mess of gyp-rock, curled sheets of torn wallpaper, and tools scattered everywhere.

"What on earth did you do here?"

"Don't worry about that," she grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the door. "Look at what I found underneath."

Shane felt at the edges of the doorway as though he was afraid he was looking at a detailed painting or an illusion instead of what an actual secret passageway. "I can't believe you really found this.
