FOUR DAYS

The gold gown hangs in my closet as a testament to my sin. I can’t even look at it without feeling like I’m going to throw up—or seeing the shocked face of that poor salesclerk in my mind.

At least it wasn’t Roman who opened the door, I tell myself. If Roman had seen me… But honestly, it doesn’t matter whether or not he witnessed the incident with his own eyes. Roman knows. The salesclerk made it very clear why he’d have to purchase the dress. Roman knows, and I’m never going to live this down.

What’s worse—in its own twisted way—is that Roman is fully aware of what happened in that fitting room but didn’t say or do anything about it. He didn’t utter a word to me when he paid for the dress, nor on the entire ride back to the Celebrity Spark offices. Something happened between us in front of that mirror. Something complicated and thrilling and… well, probably ill-advised. But after we left the boutique, he acted like it never occurred. And I was too humiliated to broach the subject myself.

Honestly, I’m so embarrassed about the whole thing that I almost called in sick to work today. But it’s not like that would have changed anything. Staying home wouldn’t have erased what happened last night.

In the end, my fears of facing Roman all came to nothing. He was only in the Celebrity Spark offices for about an hour today, and he was on his phone the whole time. He looked stressed. Pissed, even. But he never walked by my cubicle, never even glanced in my direction. In some ways, that made today a little more bearable. On the other hand, he’s given me plenty of time and space to allow this incident to evolve into a big, horrible, life-ending catastrophe in my mind. I’ve been sitting on my bed since I got home, staring at the dress in terror.

I’ve relived that mortifying scene a hundred times in my head. And I’m so lost in the hundred-and-first replay that the sudden chime of my cell phone nearly makes me jump out of my skin. My stomach drops. It’s Roman. I know it is. I should just ignore it.

But my eyes drop down to my cell of their own volition, and I see that it isn’t my boss after all. It’s my brother.

I almost ignore it anyway. The last thing I want to do is talk to Matt while I’m recovering from a certain delicate situation. But alternately… my brother might be just the thing I need to distract me. I grab the phone.

“Hey,” I say, shoving the cell beneath my ear. Please be having one of your quarter-life crisis moments. I’ve had to talk Matt off a metaphorical ledge a couple of times since he moved out here to pursue his dream of working in the film biz. If I’m lucky, it might take me a couple of hours to convince him once more that he has what it takes to cut it in the industry.
