Follow Your

Own Path

My wife’s father was a farmer. It wasn’t what he wanted to do, but the farm had been in the family for generations and he was expected to take it over. Because he had no interest in farming, he wasn’t a particularly good one and never enjoyed it. Like millions of people, he gave in to pressure from others, his parents in this case. The pressure was well-intentioned but robbed him of the life he could have had. This sort of expectation is less common today than it was, but family expectations and peer pressure still put many people into careers they’re not interested in and have no aptitude for. You don’t have to do what other people want. Living the life someone else tells you to live is never fulfilling, no matter how lucrative or prestigious it may appear. Imagine waking up one morning when you’re eighty years old, full of regrets because you failed to do what you knew you were put on this earth to accomplish.

Bronnie Ware, an Australian palliative care nurse, looked after patients in the final days or weeks of their lives. She wrote a blog post about what they told her, and ultimately wrote a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. The biggest regret her patients told her was: “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the one others expected of me” (https://bronnieware.com/blog/regrets-of-the-dying/).

It can be hard to leave the path that others encouraged you to take. After all, that’s the path that in the past proved to be a tried and tested route to security, status, and a well-paying job. When you start on a path that resonates for you, you’ll take on a degree of uncertainty and risk but will lead a life of happiness, passion, and meaning.

You’re likely to be fearful at times. My former dentist hated dentistry and wanted to pursue a career in photography. As he worked on his patients’ teeth, he told them about his dream of becoming a photographer. Many of them encouraged him to do it, as they had seen his work displayed in his office. Unfortunately, he never did; he was too scared to leave. He was making a good living as a dentist and had a large house, expensive car, and a vacation home. His children were at private schools. The thought of risking his lifestyle prevented him from following his dream, and he died in his middle fifties without ever knowing what he could have accomplished.

Everyone has fears, and you have to overcome them if you want to follow your own path. There’ll be problems to resolve, even well along the road, and there’ll be times of fear and worry, too. Everyone experiences these, even people who are on the wrong path. Don’t let fear hold you back. Recognize it and continue moving forward.

Some people discover the right path at an early age. Jane Goodall, the British primatologist, is an excellent example of someone who followed her own path.
