Chapter 5

A small beam of light illuminated her duffle bag. Thunder must have had a penlight handy in his pocket. Raine joined him in foraging for the battery operated lantern and flashlights they’d purchased.

Remembering how she’d scoffed at needing them, she was now glad he’d insisted.

The lantern cast a pale dim glow around the room. The footsteps had continued to move around intermittently. Thunder took her hand, his grip giving her both warmth and courage.

“Who else has keys to this place?” Raine whispered.

“Doc and I have the only copies,” he assured her. Then, after a pause, he added, “That I know of, anyway.”

“It wouldn’t be Doc Griffin, would it?”

“Maybe, but he wouldn’t be just walking around up there. He’d know we were here and come downstairs.” Thunder tugged on her arm as he began to move.

“Where are we going?” Raine asked, stumbling after him on fear-stiffened legs.

“Upstairs.”

“What?” She squeaked.

“It’s probably just some yoo-hoo from town trying to scare us. The best thing to do is to confront them.”

“What if it’s the person who tried to run me down in town?”

Thunder snorted, probably in disbelief that she’d done anything more than walk out into traffic. He continued to make his way through the room toward a darkened doorway. As they approached, she could see the stairs.

“There really was a truck,” she hissed.

“I believe you. However, there isn’t a truck upstairs now, is there?”

Out of arguments, she allowed him to guide her up first one stair, then another. The staircase had a small square landing, changed directions and continued up. The footsteps had continued to traverse from one end of the floor to the other, the vibration easily felt through the soles of her shoes.

Thunder raised the lantern high and the glow illuminated a wooden banister encircling the upstairs. “Hello?” he called.

A thump seemed to shake the entire house.

Raine shrank back, but Thunder pulled her along in his wake. At the top of the stairs, all the doors stood open. Four of them.

“Master bedroom.” Thunder pointed to the left. “Next door is the baby’s room. His name was Jack. Jacqueline’s room, then Jerry Junior’s.” He indicated the last door. The upstairs was half the size of the downstairs.

“Is this the only way down?” Raine asked.

Thunder shook his head. “The master bedroom has a balcony with stairs leading down all the way down to the beach. I locked all the downstairs doors when I came in after fixing the generator.”

She shot him an incredulous look. “Not having the keys didn’t keep him or her from entering before we got here.”

“True,” Thunder admitted. “I’ll take the first two rooms, you take the other two.”

“You want us to split up?” Panic sizzled in her blood.

“We have a better chance of catching whoever is up here.”

“I don’t care,” she said.

Thunder rolled his eyes. “Okay. But if something else has been damaged and I never find out who did it, I’m putting it on your bill,” he grumbled.

Together they went to the master bedroom first. Raine lingered
