Chapter Five

Tate slept so peacefully, he could have been a statue. His chest barely rose and his breathing was quiet, which added to the statue idea. For once, my apartment was stifling hot, which was definitely better than the debilitating cold I’d gotten accustomed to. After disentangling myself from Tate’s heavy arm, I pushed the blanket off and tiptoed to the window.

The chill air felt wonderful so I just stared into the darkness as my body cooled down. I happened to look down and froze. Outside was dark so I wasn’t sure if I was just seeing a mirage or not, but near the tall oak trees planted in front of the apartment complex, I could’ve sworn I saw a man looking up at me. The window covered me from the waist down and there were no lights on in my apartment, so I didn’t have to worry about him seeing me naked.

But the reason I was distraught was because I could’ve sworn the man was Patrick. The man touched the tree, almost like a caress and then took off toward the hospital. Something wasn’t right about the way he was moving.

Unnerved and completely confused, I stumbled around the room until I’d managed to locate my pants and sweater. I was in such a hurry I didn’t even bother with my boxers before sliding my pants up my legs. Finding my shoes, I glanced at Tate and wondered if I should wake him up. After all, I didn’t trust Patrick at all. But I had the feeling if I brought Tate with me, I wouldn’t be able to rest my mind about Gaven’s conspiracy theory.

I was about to leave, but paused and retrieved Tate’s pants, slipping my hand into his pockets. I pocketed the access card and then quietly left without looking back.

My chest was throbbing with anxiety, but I practically ran over the grass in my attempt to get to the hospital. The lights were still on, which was usual protocol. There was one lone nurse at the front desk but she had her head down on her hands and was breathing softly. Moving very slowly so my feet wouldn’t scrape across the floor and make any noise, I slid the key card into the slot and went onto the first floor.

There was still no one around apart from me, which unnerved me. Where had Patrick gone? Instead of taking the elevator, I took the stairs I’d found a couple of days ago near the emergency exit door. All the floors were dead, which meant the Changelings were probably sleeping. When I reached the lab, I slid the key card into the slot again and fumbled against the wall until I managed to find a switch.

When the lab flooded with light, I felt relief and disappointment. For sure, I thought Patrick would be up here, waiting to tell me another cryptic message I’d have to figure out. But now I was alone, I felt slight relief.
