Fifty minutes later, once Jenny had gone to bed and Kit had returned with the keys to the Portakabin, they crowded into the kitchen.

‘No.’ She placed her hands on her hips and shook her head from side to side so fast that Fletch wouldn’t be surprised if she had given herself concussion. ‘No, this is our deal; you’re not muscling in. Tell them, Aus.’

‘What, and you honestly think he can handle something like this?’ Stevie persisted. ‘He didn’t even have the sense to stash the goods somewhere safe.’

‘He’ll have me,’ Kit answered. She took a step closer to her father’s friend, her face contorted with rage. ‘I’ll be the one to handle everything.’

‘Hey, hold up a minute, I didn’t agree to that,’ Austin protested.

Kit ignored her brother. ‘He’s already got a buyer anyway, so as you can see we don’t need you.’

‘Who’s the buyer?’ Fletch’s voice was controlled as he spoke and they all turned to look at him.

‘Yeah, good point, who’s the buyer?’ Stevie asked.

‘A firm in Manchester.’ Austin gave a nonchalant shrug.

‘Which firm?’

‘I dunno.’ Austin shifted his weight from foot to foot. ‘Just some firm. Mark’s been dealing with them.’

‘Who’s Mark?’ Fletch narrowed his eyes.

‘My pal.’ He reached into his pocket and toyed with his mobile phone.

‘Well, get him on the blower and find out who they are.’ Fletch nodded down to the outline of a phone in his son’s pocket.

Pulling out the device, Austin shook his head. ‘He hasn’t been answering my calls. I don’t know where he is; no one has seen him since the night of the hijack.’

Kit’s cheeks flushed red and she rubbed at the back of her neck. ‘We don’t need Mark,’ she said quietly. ‘All we need to do is find a new buyer.’

Blowing out his cheeks, Stevie threw his arms up into the air. ‘And you reckon you’ve got this under control?’ He told Kit. ‘From where I’m standing, you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. A deal has already been made; you don’t go back on it now. What are you trying to do, start a war?’

‘Yes, a deal was made with Mark,’ Kit answered. ‘Not with us, was it?’

‘A buyer is the least of your problems.’ Fletch swallowed deeply in an attempt to keep his temper in check. He could seriously maim his boy for his stupidity, and if he’d been anyone else, some random geezer, he would have punched his fists into his face and not stopped until he was begging for mercy. ‘You need to get the gear into this Portakabin without being seen, first.’

‘That won’t be a problem.’ Kit pulled out her mobile phone and as her fingers flew over the keyboard, she tapped out a text message. Within seconds of pressing send, her phone pinged back a reply. ‘Rosco just arrived at the club. Dennis is going to let me know when it’s safe to shift the merchandise.’

‘And what about me and your dad?’ Stevie asked. ‘Are we in?’

‘You already know what I think,’ Kit retorted.
